Veterans Transition Program

DESCRIPTION

The  Veterans Transition Program (VTP) is a group-based program designed to assist former members of the Canadian Forces and the RCMP in their transition to life as a civilian. It provides information and teaches skills to participants who are attempting to better understand their military experience and its impact upon their lives. It also provides participants with the opportunity to engage in action-based ways of dealing with disturbing events from their lives, in or out of the military.

PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

President Red Thibodeau and 1st Vice President Dave Sinclair present Certificate of Merit to Dr. Marv Westwood (UBC)BC/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian Legion forged a professional partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVIC) to design the CMVTP. Originally designed for Veterans of the Second World War and Korea War, Dr. Marv Westwood (UBC) introduced the program over eight years ago. Given the success of this specialized, tailored program, the CMVTP was expanded to include retired members of the Canadian Forces with the assistance of Dr. Tim Black (UVIC).

OBJECTIVES

• In a systematic and professionally facilitated, confidential environment, assist
former members of the Canadian Military to understand the impact that their
experiences have had on their lives.
• Provide group-based learning experiences which focus upon communication and
coping skills in dealing with trauma and reverse cultural shock.
• Encourage peer interaction to resolve events from the past which impact upon
current functioning at work, within the family and in social settings.
• Techniques and referrals for successful transition from military to civilian life.

 FORMAT

The VTP is comprised of four, three hour Friday night sessions as well as four full days sessions on Saturday. The group consists of seven to ten participants, two or more professional facilitators and two peer support workers, usually a former Service member who has gone through the program. The group adheres to the norms of confidentiality, timeliness, right to pass, equal discussion time and non-judgmental participation.

 EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Participants will learn about the transition process and the effect of trauma on the person. They will gain knowledge about skills for self-regulation, communication and how to effectively complete “unfinished business”. They may expect improved relationships at work, at home and in social settings. Participants will leave with the dignity, finding resolve in having served their duty with honour.

 FREE REGISTRATION

The VTP is completely free of charge to participants. Potential participants have an initial telephone interview, followed by a one hour screening interview with the lead facilitators. If an individual is not ready for participation in the VTP, that person will be provided with alternative referrals which may be more suitable.
