National Peacekeepers’ Day

August 9th has been proclaimed Canada’s official National Peacekeepers’ Day, which will be observed every year hereinafter, as enacted with the passing of Bill C-287 (June 18, 2008). The symbolism of August 9th relates to Canada’s greatest single loss in one day, when nine Peacekeepers were killed in action, while serving with the United Nations Emergency Forces in Egypt and Israel in 1974.

National Peacekeepers’ Day is one way for Canadians to express pride and honour members of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, other police forces and members of Canada’s diplomatic Corps and civilians, who continue to support international peace and security operations throughout the world.

Canada’s elated respectability among the international community, is largely attributed to our historic and significant role, in bringing the concept of peacekeeping to the world. Canadian Peacekeeping operations foster sustainable peace and security in countries devastated by conflict. Canadian Peacekeepers are trained and skilled in providing a diverse range of support including such things as: humanitarian aid; supervising elections; repatriating refugees; training police forces; clearing mines; disarming warring factions; improving educational and democratic systems. The mission of the Canadian Forces is to defend our country, its interests and values, while contributing to international peace and security.
