INTRODUCTION
Designated as a Canadian National Historic Site, Veterans Cemetery in Esquimalt, British Columbia, endearingly referred to as, God's Acre, has been a sacred final resting place for those who served at sea since 1868. As years passed, God's Acre was opened to all service personnel in Canada's military. God's Acre is presently the final resiting place for more than 2,500 military personnel and their family members. This beautiful, historic, and picturesque cemetery is the only one of it's kind in Canada, solely dedicated to our men and women in uniform.
THE CHAPEL
Nestled under enormous evergreen trees at God's Acre, is the tranquil, historic Chapel. The Chapel was constructed from many different woods from around the British Commonwealth, including camphor, teak, ironwood and mahogany. The Royal Navy ships are commemorated in the Chapel with plaques, old ship's lanterns and the White Ensign of the Royal Canadian Navy. With special permission, the quaint, beautiful Chapel may be used for marriages, christenings, memorial services and Candlelight Tributes.
THE CROSS OF SACRIFICE
In 1961 The Cross of Sactific was unveiled by Major General George R. Pearkes, a Victoria Cross Recipient and former Minister of National Defence and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. This monument design dates back to 1917 and is found in all war cemeteries in the British Commonwealth.
